Italy secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup after a narrow 2-1 victory in South Korea over 2013 winners France at the Cheonan Sports Complex.

The Italian side avenged their defeat to France in the final of last year's UEFA European U-19 Championship thanks to goals from Riccardo Orsolini and Guiseppe Panico.

Orsolini swept home a left-footed volley to give Italy the lead after 27 minutes, the first goal France had conceded at the tournament.

The French side hit back 10 minutes later when Jean-Kevin Augustin found the net from the penalty spot after Amine Harit was fouled in the box.

Panico then put the Italians back in front after the break as he converted Andrea Favilli’s cross.

It proved to be the match-winner as Italy's defence held firm to ensure they progressed to the last eight, where they will meet Zambia, who claimed a thrilling extra-time triumph over Germany yesterday.

The United States booked their quarter-final berth in style as they thrashed New Zealand 6-0 at the Incheon Stadium.

Josh Sargent opened the scoring for the American outfit on the half-hour and the US scored five more in a dominant spell after the restart.

Jeremy Ebobisse's thunderous effort doubled their advantage, before Brooks Lennon got his name on the scoresheet with a precise finish.

Justen Glad made it four with just over 15 minutes remaining and further goals from Auston Trusty and Lagos Kunga completed the rout for the Americans, whose quarter-final opponents will be Venezuela.

In the other round of 16 match to take place today, substitute Ronaldo Cisneros came off the bench and scored a dramatic 89th-minute winner to give Mexico a 1-0 victory against Senegal at the Incheon Stadium.

Neither side could find a breakthrough until Cisneros popped up with a late goal to send Mexico through to the quarter-finals, where they will play England.
