Ratchanok Intanon continued her pursuit of clinching the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Thailand Open on home soil with a battling three-game victory over Sayaka Takahashi of Japan in Bangkok - but men's second seed Marc Zweiber is out.

Top seed Intanon, the 2013 world champion and former world number one, was made to work hard by Takahashi as she claimed a 24-22, 10-21, 21-18 triumph at the Nimibutr Stadium in the Thai capital.

The 22-year-old will face compatriot and fifth seed Nitchaon Jindapol in the next round.

Jindapol, part of the Thailand team which earned the bronze medal at the recent Sudirman Cup in Gold Coast, progressed by virtue of a 21-18, 21-19 win against Indonesia's Sri Fatmawati.

Indian star Saina Nehwal, the Olympic bronze medallist at London 2012, is also through as she overcame Malaysia's Ying Ying Lee 21-11, 21-14.

Haruko Suzuki of Japan, who needed three games to get past home hope Supanida Katethong, awaits for Nehwal in the next round.

Beiwen Zhang of the United States continued the strong performance from the seeded players as she swept aside Indonesia's Ruselli Hartawan.

Zhang, the third seed, needed less than half an hour to dispatch Hartawan 21-17, 21-15.

The American will have the home crowd on her back in her next match as she is scheduled to go up against Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong, the sixth seed.

In the men's singles, Zwiebler's quest for the BWF Thailand Open title is over after he suffered a surprise 22-20, 21-9 defeat at the hands of Malaysia's Joo Ven Soong.

The Malaysian competitor will next take on fellow unseeded player Lee Cheuk-yin of Hong Kong.

Top seed Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand avoided the same fate as Zwiebler, progressing with a 21-17, 21-16 win against team-mate Suppanyu Avihingsanon.

There were other shocks in the men's doubles as both the first and second seeded pairings exited the competition.

Top seeds Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup of Denmark were beaten 18-21, 21-15, 21-19 by Thailand's Tinn Isriyanet and Kittisak Namdash.

Han Chengkai and Zhou Haodong of China had earlier stunned the Thai support by knocking out second seeds Bodin Isara and Nipitphon Phuangphuapet 7-21, 21-16, 21-15.

The tournament continues tomorrow.
