American pair Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena beat Russian pair Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Nikita Liamin of Russia to clinch the men's title at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach World Tour event in Moscow.

Dalhausser and Lucena denied the Russians a fairytale win at the Vodny Stadium Beach Sports Centre with a hard-fought 21-17, 22-24, 18-16 success.

The fourth seeds proved too strong as they topped the podium to ensure they took home prize money of $10,000 (£7,800/€8,900).

They did not have it all their own way, however, as the Russian team put up a valiant fight, particularly in a gruelling second set.

Summer Youth Olympic Games gold medallists Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Artem Yarzutkin had earlier taken the bronze medal to the delight of the home crowd.

The 15th seeds, who won their Youth Olympic Games gold medal at Nanjing 2014, overcame top-seeded Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins of Latvia in a surprise result, recovering from a set down to seal an 18-21, 21-14, 15-8 triumph.

In the women's event, Brazilian pair Talita Antunes and Larissa Franca secured their 15th World Tour gold medal with victory over Summer Ross and Brooke Sweat of the United States.

The veteran duo claimed a comfortable win as they eased to the title by virtue of a 21-16, 21-14 success.

"First in Fort Lauderdale, but fifth in Rio and now gold again," said Antunues.

"We are so happy to get this gold after not doing so well in Rio.

"We had a tough week in Moscow. It was really cold.

"But we did the best we could in this Russian summer."

The bronze medal also went to Brazil after Germany's Victoria Bieneck, partnered with Isabel Schneider, was forced to withdraw through injury when they were trailing 21-14, 13-8 to Agatha Bednarczuk and Eduarda Lisboa.
