Hungary claimed a dramatic 8-7 win over The Netherlands today to secure a place in the penultimate round of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Women's World League Super Final in Shanghai.

Gabriella Szucs scored the decisive goal in the final second of the match at the Natatorium.

The Dutch then managed to score from what appeared to be the restart, only for the ball to be called back despite huge protestations from the bench.

The referee had not blown her whistle, but the clock started and the buzzer sounded after the shot.

At the actual restart, it proved impossible for Lieke Klaassen to shoot.

Hungary had led for most of the match, but gave up a three-goal advantage in the final quarter to allow The Netherlands to draw level with 18 seconds left.

Barbara Bujka bagged a brace for the Hungarians, while Szucs was one of six players to score a single goal along with Dora Czigany, Dorottya Szilagyi, Anna Illes, Rita Keszthelyi and Dora Csabai.

Awaiting Hungary in the semi-finals are reigning champions the United States, who breezed to a 13-4 victory over Australia.

Kiley Neushul top scored for the Americans with four goals.

On the other side of the draw, Canada had to come from 2-0 down against Japan to grind out a 9-5 success thanks in part to Hayley McKelvey’s four goals.

Next up for them is a meeting with Russia, who thrashed hosts China 16-8.

Elvina Karimova and Olga Gorbunova each netted hat-tricks for the Russians.

Both semi-finals are scheduled to take place tomorrow and will be preceded by the fifth to eighth-place play-off matches between The Netherlands and Australia and China and Japan.

The third-place play-off and final are due to be held on Sunday (June 11).
