Home fans were left delighted as British athletes dominated the men’s World Triathlon Series (WTS) competition in Leeds today.

All eyes were on Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, the Rio 2016 Olympic gold and silver medallists, as the pair were competing in their local race.

The duo did not disappoint the crowd as they broke clear during the bike leg of the race, with their rivals unable to close the gap during the remainder of the race.

Alistair, who has been competing in middle and longer distance triathlon races since defending his Olympic title, then pulled away from his brother in the 10 kilometre run.

He claimed victory in a time of 1 hour, 46min and 51sec, with Jonathan ending 14sec behind to end as the runner-up.

“I mean obviously races like that take a bit of circumstance to help you out,” said the elder Brownlee brother.

“It was the little bits I didn’t know – I didn’t know what I’d be like in the swim start and I didn’t know if I’d struggle that first part of the bike because I haven’t done a lot of training for that kind of thing.

“Obviously little bits like that make the race and they did today, fortunately I felt good.”
