Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines and St Lucia have become the latest countries to welcome the Gold Coast 2018 Queen’s Baton.

Trinidad and Tobago staged the first leg of the Baton’s Caribbean tour earlier this month, as the countdown continues towards next year’s Commonwealth Games.

Grenada used the visit to also mark the build-up to the Commonwealth Youth Games, with their six-strong team taking part in celebrations.

Rufus Vesprey, a boxer, was among the athletes to join children in relaying the Baton around the recently rebuilt national athletics stadium, named in honour of World Championship, Olympic and Commonwealth 400m gold medallist Kirani James.

Vesprey will hope to make an impact at the Commonwealth Youth Games, which will take place from July 19 to 23 in Nassau.

The Baton also spent time on Grand Anse Beach and the Corinth Government School, where it was greeted by a marching band and maypole dancers.

Several school stops were made on the Baton’s visit to St Vincent and the Grenadines, from primary to secondary and special needs.

It is claimed the relay provided a platform to engage and educate the children about the values of the Commonwealth and its Games.

Athletes from a variety of sport disciplines including netball, boxing, rugby and gymnastics also took part in the relay, while the Baton was transported across Jackson’s Bay on a double scull boat.

The Baton was taken to the Pitons, a World Heritage Site, at the start of its journey around St Lucia.

Having visited the two large peaks on the island, several historic site and school stops were conducted.

It travelled to the capital city, Castries, to the Governor General’s residence, while high jumper and double Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Levern Spencer also held the Baton.

She received the Baton at her former school, with the athlete seeking to inspire children present.

The relay continued to the Rodney Heights Aquatic Centre.

The Baton is now in Barbados.
