France and Italy claimed the respective men’s foil and women’s sabre team titles at the European Fencing Championships in Tbilisi today as Russia lost out in both finals.

The men’s team foil final saw France triumph 45-43 over the Russians at the Georgian capital's Gymnastic Arena.

They had earlier claimed a 45-26 semi-final victory over Germany, who went onto lose the bronze medal match 45-40 at the hands of Italy.

In the women’s team sabre final, Italy defeated Russia 45-44.

France, who lost 45-39 in their semi-final match against Italy, overcame Hungary 45-37 to secure a third-place finish.

Action in Tbilisi is due to continue tomorrow when the men’s individual sabre and women’s individual épée events take centre stage.

The competition is offering fencers a final chance to hone their preparations before the World Championships in Leipzig.

Competition in the German city is scheduled to run from July 19 to 26.
