Defending women’s doubles champions Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi suffered defeat in the first round at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Indonesian Open.

The Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallists suffered a 21-7, 22-20 defeat to China’s Huang Yaqiong and Yu Xiaohan at the Jakarta Convention Center.

Huang and Yu will now face Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota of Japan in the second round.

There were no such problems for second seeds Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christinna Pedersen of Denmark, who cruised to a 21-16, 21-8 over Hye Rin Kim and Yoo Hae Won of South Korea.

The Danish duo are set to meet Poon Lok Yan and Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong.

Men’s top seed Lee Chong Wei suffered a scare in the opening round of the men’s singles, with the Malaysia star having lost the opening game against Tommy Sugiarto.

Lee battled back though to win the contest against the home favourite 13-21, 21-10, 21-18 to reach the second round.

India’s Prannoy Kumar will clash with the top seed, having won his opening tie 21-13, 21-18 against Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.

Indonesia’s hopes of home success took a further blow when Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo lost in the men’s doubles.

The top seeded duo suffered a straight games 21-16, 21-16 loss to Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen.

The Danes will face the challenge of Liu Cheng and Zhang Nan in the second round, with Chinese pair having won their first match 21-17, 21-12 against Malaysia’s Yew Sin Ong and Ee Yi Teo.

Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen continued the Danish challenge as the second seeds won 21-18, 21-23, 21-15 against Berry Angriawan and Hardianto Hardianto of Indonesia.

The tournament, a World Superseries Premier event, will continue tomorrow.
