Top seeds continued to be shed at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Indonesian Open as defending men’s champion Lee Chong Wei suffered a second round loss.

The Malaysian star had come from behind to win his opening match yesterday at the Jakarta Convention Center.

Lee was unable to repeat the feat today, falling to a straight games 21-10, 21-18 loss to India’s Prannoy Kumar.

He follows defending women’s doubles champions Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi of Japan and Spain’s Olympic women’s singles gold medallist Carolina Marin in making early exits from the tournament.

Kumar’s rewarded is a quarter-final date with eight seed Chen Long, with the Chinese player having won 21-9, 21-7 against Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie.

Son Wan Ho, the tournament second seed, battled into the quarter-finals after beating Chinese qualifier Zhao Junpeng.

The South Korean won the contest 20-22, 21-7, 21-16.

He will face Chou Tien Chen in the semi-finals, after the Chinese Taipei star won 21-12, 20-22, 21-15 against Anders Antonsen of Denmark.

Chen’s compatriot Tai Tzu Ying, the top seed in the women’s singles draw, eased into the quarter-finals in Indonesia.

She beat Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung 21-13, 21-16 to move into the last eight.

The world number one will take on Thailand’s Nitchaon Jindapol, who overcame India’s 21-15, 6-21, 21-16.

Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi overcame compatriot Nozomi Okuhara in another tightly fought match, with the third seed advancing 15-21, 21-19, 21-15.

Yamaguchi now faces another all-Japanese clash, after Sayaka Sato won 21-14 16-21, 21-12 against Lee Chia Hsin of Chinese Taipei.

The tournament, a World Superseries Premier event, will continue tomorrow.
