Hundreds of athletes will be taking to the waters of Lake Malta in Poznan as the second stage of the Rowing World Cup season takes place.

Competition begins tomorrow in the Polish city with Olympic medallists among those set to feature over the three days of action.

France’s Jeremie Azou and Pierre Houin, the lightweight men’s double sculls gold medallists from Rio 2016, will be heading out onto the lake and are set to face Irish brothers Gary and Paul O’Donovan, who came second at the Games in the Brazilian city.

China’s Duan Jingli is another Rio 2016 medallist who will be at the regatta.

The 28-year-old won bronze in the single sculls, but she faces a tough challenge from Great Britain’s Victoria Thornley, a silver medallist in the double sculls in Rio alongside Dame Katherine Grainger, who is looking for a third podium placing of the season.

In the men’s single sculls, Croatia’s Damir Martin will be among the favourites.

The man who came second behind the Mahe Drysdale at Rio 2016 will be up against a different New Zealander in Poznan in the form of Robert Manson, whose successful team-mate is currently taking a break from the sport.

There is also set to an interesting battle in the women’s eights as the Olympic champions of the United States will face off against two Chinese boats along with crews from New Zealand and Britain.

For the first time, Para rowing races will be held alongside the able-bodied events in a World Cup, with competitions in the single sculls for both men and women.

There will also be racing in mixed double sculls and coxed fours.
