Two World Championship medallists exited the women's competition at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Japan Open in Tokyo.

Singapore's top seed Feng Tianwei, a women's doubles bronze medallist with Yu Mengyu at the World Championships in German city Düsseldorf this month and a two-time winner in Japan, suffered an early exit as she lost in round two.

After ousting Austria’s Sofia Polcanova in the first round she went down to Chinese 16-year-old Sun Yingsha 11-8, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7, 12-10.

Japan's third seed Kasumi Ishikawa, who won mixed doubles gold with Maharu Yoshimura in Düsseldorf, fell in the first round at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

She was beaten 6-11, 11-8, 11-6, 14-12, 11-7 on home soil by China's 18-year-old Wang Manyu.

China's second seed Chen Meng had no such trouble as she beat Minnie Soo Wai Yam of Hong Kong 11-7, 11-6, 12-10, 11-5.

Her second round clash will be held tomorrow.

In the men's competition, Germany's number six seed Timo Boll was knocked out by China's Lin Gaoyuan.

Boll went down 11-6, 11-7, 6-11, 11-5, 11-8.

China's top seed Ma Long, the world and Olympic champion, beat Japan’s Maharu Yoshimura 18-16, 11-7, 11-2, 11-2 in the first round before knocking out Hong Kong’s Ho Kwan Kit 11-4, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7.

World Championship runner-up Fan Zhendong, the second seeded Chinese, was too strong for Japan's Masaki Yoshida as he came through 12-10, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9 with just the first round played.

Third-seed Xu Xin, another Chinese player, won twice, firstly 11-5, 11-6, 12-10, 11-4 against Sweden's Mattias Karlsson.

He then saw off Japan's Kenta Matsudaira 11-5, 11-9, 7-11, 11-4, 12-10 to reach the quarter-finals.

Competition will continue at the ITTF World Tour event in Tokyo, the host city of the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, tomorrow.
