Russia’s Ilya Zakharov held off home favourites Illya Kvasha and Oleg Kolodiy to win the men’s three metres springboard event on day five of the European Diving Championships at the Liko Sports Centre in Kyiv.

The London 2012 Olympic champion missed out on a podium place at last year’s Championships in England’s capital London but he produced a near-perfect performance today to register an unrivalled total of 525.10 points.

Kvasha, who won the men’s 1m springboard event on Wednesday (June 14), came second with 484.30 points.

Fellow Ukrainian Kolodiy clinched bronze with 470.30 points, while Germany’s Patrick Hausding surprisingly failed to reach the final.

Zakharov is now eyeing top honours at this year's World Aquatics Championships, which are due to be staged in Budapest between July 14 to 30.

"As I had expected it was a great battle with the famous Ukraine divers today," he said.

"My dives have been strong and difficult, although I made a few mistakes today.

"At the World Championships in Budapest I would like to fight for gold."

In the second-ever edition of the mixed synchronised 10m platform event, Great Britain’s Lois Toulson and Matthew Lee grabbed gold with 308.16 points.

Only 2.14 points separated the leading three pairs prior to the last round with Russia’s Yulia Timoshinina and Viktor Minibaev ultimately finishing second with 300.30 and Italian duo Maicol Verzotto and Noemi Batki earning the bronze medal with 299.58.

"It was a good competition for us today," Lee said.

Victory for Toulson secured her a second gold medal at the Championships having won the women’s 10m platform event on Tuesday (June 13).

Action in Kyiv is due to continue tomorrow with the men’s 3m synchronised and women’s 1m springboard events.
