"Designer was really relaxed today," said Hoy, who won the event in 2005 with Ringwood Cockatoo.

"I was a little annoyed about the small fault we had in the first extended trot, but otherwise he felt great.

"In fact, the last trot was so good I almost forgot to halt for the final salute."

The competition will continue tomorrow with the cross-country phase, before concluding with show jumping on Sunday (June 18).

"I am sure we will all enjoy tomorrow’s cross-country, but time could be an issue," Hoy added.

"The many loops will make it hard to stay within the optimum time."
