The women's quartet of Fu Ying, Yang Hengyu, Yu Xinting and Zhang Xueqian claimed a narrow victory over South Korea in the sabre final at the AsiaWorld-Expo.

The Chinese team had to fight hard to secure top spot on the podium as they prevailed with a tense 45-43 win against the South Korean side, represented by Hwang Seona, Kim Ji-yeon, Seo Ji-yeon and Yoon Ji-su.

China reached the final by ending the hopes of Japan, progressing to the tournament's showpiece encounter with a 45-30 triumph.

South Korea, who were beaten by China in the gold medal match at last year's Asian Fencing Championships, beat the host nation by the same scoreline.

Japan then claimed the bronze medal thanks to a 45-38 win over Hong Kong.

The Chinese men's foil team avenged their loss to the South Korean outfit at the 2016 event, held in Wuxi, as Chen Haiwei, Li Chen, Mo Ziwei and Shi Jialou earned a 45-29 victory.

The result meant Ha Tae-gyu, Heo Jun, Kim Hyo-gon and Son Young Ki had to settle for the silver medal.

China had proved too strong for Japan in their semi-final, emerging with a 45-31 success, while South Korea beat Hong Kong 45-41 to ensure they would get the chance to defend their crown.

The bronze medal went to Hong Kong as they delighted the home crowd by beating Japan 45-35.
