Denmark secured gold in the mixed team relay at the European Triathlon Championships in Kitzbühel in Austria.

Their quartet was led off by Anne Holm, who led the first wave of athletes around the course, handing over to Andreas Schilling in 9min and 19sec.

Schilling put Denmark in complete control of the event after recording the fastest time of the day, ending his leg in 8:08.

Sif Bendix Madsen and Emil Deleuran Hansen preserved Denmark’s advantage over the field, with their team ending with a combined time of 17:45.33.

France finished as the runners-up in the event, ending just six seconds off the pace on the Danish team.

The podium was completed by Russia, who ended in a time of 17:45.48.

Austria and Britain, who started the event without newly crowd women’s individual champion Jessica Learmonth, finished in fourth and fifth respectively.

They ended the race with times of 17:45.53 and 17:45.57.

The elite mixed relay was held a week after the discipline was added to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games programme.
