David Moura became the men's over-100 kilogram world number one as Brazil clinched two further titles on the last day of the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Prix in Cancun.

Moura produced a strong display in the men's heavyweight competition, beating the United States' Arash Soofiani in the semi-finals with a rapid ippon at the Polifórum Benito Juárez.

The Brazilian would clinch gold by overcoming Alex Garcia Mendoza of Cuba in the final, with his rival receiving three shido penalties during the clash.

Back-to-back titles on the IJF World Judo Tour, following Grand Slam victory in Ekaterinburg last month, have seen Moura rise to the top of the world rankings for the first time in his career.

Chile’s Francisco Solis completed the podium, with Soofiani receiving three penalties in the single bronze medal match to take place.

Mayra Aguiar delivered Brazil's second gold medal of the day, after the two-time Olympic bronze medallist fended off the challenge of Britain’s Natalie Powell in the women’s under-78kg event.

Aguiar secured a victory by ippon over her rival, marking her return to the World Tour in style after her break following the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Cuba’s Kaliema Antomarchi and Karen Leon of Venezuela earned the division’s bronze medals.

The women’s over-78kg title was claimed by Croatia’s Ivana Sutalo at the expense of home favourite Melanie Bolanos.

Sutalo was the dominant judoka in the field, winning all of her contests by ippon to emerge as the winner of the division’s gold medal.

Britain’s Sarah Adlington took the first bronze medal after her opponent was unable to compete due to an injury, while Slovenia’s Anamari Velensek achieved an ippon against the United States’ Nina Cutro-Kelly.

Spain’s Nikoloz Sherazadishvili earned the best result of his career to date, with the top seed winning his first Grand Prix title in the men’s under-90kg division.

He trailed Azerbaijan’s Tural Safguliyev by a waza-ari score in the gold medal match, but was able to achieve an ippon to turn the tie around.

Serbia’s Nemanja Majdov won the first bronze by scoring two waza-aris against the United States’ Colton Brown, before Cuba’s Ivan Felipe Silva Morales defeated Zachary Burt, after the Canadian picked up three shido penalties.

The final title of the day was earned by Peter Paltchik, with the Israeli judoka prevailing in the men’s under-100kg competition.

He overcame Britain’s Benjamin Fletcher with a late ippon to claim the victory.

The bronze medals were earned by Andy Granda of Cuba and Britain’s Philip Awiti-Alcaraz.
