Anauel Ngamissengue of the Republic of Congo secured a victory on home soil on day two of action at the African Boxing Championships in Brazzaville.

Ngamussengue, who competed at Rio 2016 but was knocked out of the middleweight event in the round of 32, proved too strong for his opponent throughout.

He was awarded a unanimous points victory over Justin Hounkpevi of Benin.

Another Rio 2016 Olympian, Jonas Junias of Nambia, was also victorious today.

The 23-year-old, who won light-welterweight bronze at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, carried his country's flag during the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony.

He was defeated in the round of 32 in the Brazilian city but forced the referee to stop his contest with Hernany Lima Gomes of Cape Verde in the first round today.

Uganda's Yusuf Hasanali Abdulsamad was also in impressive form as he knocked out Algeria's Azzouz Boudia in the second round of their middleweight bout.

Algerian duo Souhila Bouchene and Ouidad Sfouh both made it through to the semi-finals of women's competition.

Bouchene defeated Lethabo Modukanele of Botswana on a unanimous decision in the light flyweight event while Sfouh won her bantamweight clash with Oumayma El Ouali El Alami of Morocco on a split decision.

Action will continue in Brazzaville tomorrow.

The tournament was initially due to begin on May 27 but the dates were changed to ensure that the event "met the high standards demanded from such a prestigious competition".

It is the sole African qualifying event for the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg and will now finish on June 25.
