World Curling Federation (WCF) President Kate Caithness has been awarded an honorary professorship by Beijing Sport University (BSU).

Chi Jian, the President of the BSU in China's capital, presented the Scot with the accolade during a special ceremony.

Caithness was in the city for the International Olympic Committee's Coordination Commission inspection for the Beijing 2022 Winter Games.

"President Caithness expressed her gratitude at being made an honorary professor of BSU and introduced the development of curling in the world and the current state of development in China," a WCF statement said.

A number of other officials from the BSU attended the ceremony, including Cao Weidong, the party secretary of the university, and winter sport head Liu Chengliang.

The heads of the curling, ice hockey, bobsleigh and skeleton departments were also present.

The university is hoping to encourage more cooperation with the WCF, and further develop winter sports at the BSU as China aims for a strong home showing at Beijing 2022.

It is considered one of the best places to study physical education in China.

The university, which has more than 14,000 students, was established in 1953.
