Local hero Stephane Houdet eased into round two of the men's wheelchair tennis singles event at the 2017 Open de France in Paris today.

The tournament's second seed delighted the home crowd as he eased to a comfortable 6-4, 6-1 victory over Japan's Takuya Miki.

Third seed Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina was in emphatic form as he progressed without dropping a game.

The 20-year-old crushed Lahcen Majdi of France 6-0, 6-0.

Great Britain's Alfie Hewett, the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games silver medallist, also made it through despite a scare from Frenchman Frederic Cattaneo.

The Briton won the opening set 6-4 before being pegged back by Cattaneo, who secured the second 6-3.

Hewett's class shone through as he sealed a place in round two by taking the third set 6-3.

In the women's singles event, Marjolein Buis of The Netherlands made it through to the quarter-finals.

The London 2012 doubles gold medallist produced a 6-2, 6-1 win over Emmanuelle Morch of France.

Buis will now play compatriot Jiske Griffioen for a place in the semi-finals after she was handed a bye.

Great Britain's Lucy Shuker arguably produced the shock of the day as she came from a set down to oust Dutch fourth seed Aniek Van Koot 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Competition comes just weeks before the second Grand Slam of the season, with wheelchair tennis action on the grass at Wimbledon scheduled for July 13 to 16.

The event is an International Tennis Federation Super Series competition.
