Defending champion Petr Khamukov bowed out at the quarter-final stage of the European Boxing Championships in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

The Russian fighter suffered a comprehensive 5-0 loss to Ukraine’s home favourite Oleksandr Khyzhniak in the men’s 75 kilogram middleweight competition.

Having delighted the crowd at the Lokomotyv Sports Palace, Khyzhniak will also be relieved at securing a spot at the World Championships, which are due to be held in German city Hamburg from August 25 to September 3.

Khyzhniak will take on Salvatore Cavallaro for a place in the final, with the Italian having won unanimously against The Netherlands’ Max van der Pas.

The second semi-final will feature Hungary’s Zoltan Adam Harcsa, who was a unanimous points winner against Slovakia’s Andrej Csemez.

Harcsa will face Azerbaijan’s Kamran Shakhsuvarly, after he beat Germany’s Silvio Schierle on the judges’ scorecards.

England’s Peter McGrail progressed to the last four of the men’s 56kg bantamweight competition in fine fashion.

He secured a unanimous points victory over Ahmed Chaouki El Ahmad of Denmark in the quarter-finals, with Spain’s Jose Quiles Brotons lying in wait in the semi-finals.

Ukraine’s Mykola Butsenko impressed in front of a home crowd by beating Scotland’s Lee McGregor.

The local fighter will face Ireland’s Kurt Walker for a place in the final.

The men’s 64kg light welterweight competition saw England’s Luke McCormack edge Ireland’s Sean McComb 3-2 on the judges’ scorecards.

McCormack will now meet Lithuania’s Evaldas Petrauskas.

Armenia’s Hovhannes Bachkov and Poland’s Mateusz Tomasz Polski will contest the second semi-final, after they won their fights with unanimous verdicts today.
