Åre 2019 have partnered with the Jämtland County Government have pledged to deliver at fossil fuel free Alpine World Ski Championships.

An agreement was reached by Åre 2019 and the local Government to promote sustainable development and limit climate impact at the Championships in the Swedish ski resort.

A charter defined number of concrete measures, which Åre 2019 claim will pave the way for a milestone in winter sports event organisation.

“Ensuring positive legacies and showing respect for the environment are at the core of our mission and integrated in all our work,” said Niklas Carlsson, Åre 2019 chief executive.

“To manage the event’s impact further, we have created a structured sustainability programme and one of our priorities is limiting climate impact by reducing the event’s carbon footprint.”

The charter was developed in cooperation with the Jämtland Härjedalen Region, the municipalities of Åre and Östersund, as well as Åre 2019.

Organisers of the Östersund 2019 Biathlon World Championships were also involved in developing the charter.

The 2019 Alpine World Ski Championships will use sustainable practices and development in areas such as public transport, electric vehicles and renewable energy according to organisers.

Åre 2019 state it will build upon the existing vision of the Jämtland Härjedalen region, in which Åre is located.

The region has set a target of being fossil fuel free by 2030, with the charter also helping to further a cooperation known as the Green Highway, set up with the neighbouring Trondelag region of Norway.

The 2019 Alpine World Ski Championships will take place from February 5 to 17.
