France’s Valentin Prades secured a second International Modern Pentathlon Union World Cup Final title in Lithuania’s capital Vilnius.

Prades began the event in Vingis Park with solid results in the fencing and swimming stages of the competition, ending eighth and 18th in the respective disciplines.

He would ignite his challenge for the title by producing a clean round in the riding, which catapulted the Frenchman towards the top of the standings.

Prades would begin the combined event just one second behind leader Sherif Rashad of Egypt, but quickly overtook and began to pull away from his rival.

Ukraine's Pavlo Tymoshchenko, the Olympic silver medallist, was able to close on Prades when the Frenchman briefly stalled at one of the shooting stations.

The pair would go head-to-head towards the finish, but Prades would eventually cross the line four seconds clear of Tymoshchenko in a time of 10min 56.04sec.

Prades would end with a total of 1,475 points, as he won the title for the second time, having previously done so in Nizhniy Novgorod back in 2013.

"I had a good first shoot and I knew that Tymoshchenko was close behind me, but I knew I had the power in me," said Prades.

"My last shoot was not good, but I won the competition and that was my primary objective.

“My fencing was not great, and it gives me a good base to work from ahead of the World Championships."

"It's a good day for me because four years ago I won my first senior title at the World Cup Final in Russia, and today I won again."

Tymoshchenko finished the event just four points behind the winner on a total of 1,471.

The podium was completed by Jaroslaw Swiderski, with the Polish athletes having scored 1,463.

The women’s final will take place tomorrow, before the event concludes with the mixed team relay on Sunday (June 25).
