Top seeds The Netherlands began their pursuit of the men's title with two victories as action began at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3x3 Under-18 World Cup in Chengdu.

The Dutch side were in impressive form, beating Turkmenistan and the Philippines in Pool A at a court set up outside the Global Center in the Chinese city.

The Netherlands proved too strong for Turkmenistan in their opening match by claiming an 18-12 win.

They were made to work hard for their second triumph of the day as they were pushed all the way by a determined Philippines side, before eventually emerging on the right side of a 13-10 scoreline.

In Pool D, Belgium also picked up two wins as the 12th seeds overcame Indonesia 18-11.

The Belgian team then swept aside Jordan with a dominant 21-3 victory to surge to the summit of the four-team pool.

Romania, seeded fourth, managed the same feat as they beat Uganda 18-8 and Jordan 18-9.

In the women's competition, Russia and the Czech Republic were both claimed victory in their opening two matches.

Russia accounted for third seeds Argentina 13-8 with an impressive display in Pool C.

The sixth seeds then disappointed the home crowd in their second contest of the day, overcoming China 17-12.

Argentina had earlier got their campaign of to a winning start with a battling 19-18 triumph over South American rivals Venezuela.

In Pool B, second seeds The Netherlands thrashed Andorra 20-5 but suffered a shock 11-10 reverse at the hands of the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic also defeated Germany 14-10.

Qatar and France, defending champions in men's and women's competitions respectively, are due to be in action when the event continues tomorrow.

The top two from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals on July 2, which will be followed by the semi-finals, third-place playoff and final on the same day.

Individual dunk, shoot-out and skills contests will also be held alongside the matches.

The 3x3 discipline was officially added to the programme at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games earlier this month.
