Raninder Singh has been re-elected as President of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) for a third time by an overwhelming majority.

He beat his only rival, Shyam Singh Yadav, President of the Uttar Pradesh Rifle Association, by 89 votes to one in an election at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali.

Singh, a graduate of Buckingham University in the UK, had also beaten Yadav at the election in 2009.

The 49-year-old politician is the son of Amarinder Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab.

Singh remains an active shooter who has represented India in International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup events.

His first challenge as he starts his second term is dealing with a proposal by the Indian Government to add an 18 per cent goods and service tax on all imports.

India's top competitors, including Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, have warned this could affect their preparations for major competitions because most of their equipment is imported.

Singh promised he will "personally take up the matter on behalf of the Federation with the Ministry of Finance, via the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, in right earnest".

Behind hockey, shooting is India's most successful Olympic sport.

They have won a total of four medals, including Bindra's gold in the men's 10 metre air rifle at Beijing 2008.

India is also the second most successful country in shooting at the Commonwealth Games.

They have won 118 medals, including 56 gold, and rank second only behind Australia.

Elected unanimously at the elections were Kalikesh Narain Singh Deo as senior vice-president.

DV Seetharama Rao was re-elected for a second term as secretary general.
