Olli Ojanaho of Finland and Switzerland's Simona Aebersold both secured their second gold medals of the 2017 Junior World Orienteering Championships in Tampere today.

Ojanaho and Aebersold followed up their middle distance success by winning the men's and women's sprint races respectively in the Finnish city.

The Finnish athlete, who has been in unstoppable form throughout the event so far, powered to the top of the podium by completing the 3.5 kilometres course in a time of 13min 59sec.

Tommy Hayes secured a rare medal for New Zealand as he came through to take silver, eight seconds behind Ojanaho.

The bronze medal was sealed by Joey Hadorn, who added to Switzerland's haul at the competition by coming through to take third place.

Aebersold continued her monopoly of the women's events at the Junior World Championships as she claimed the sprint in 14:02.

She beat nearest challenger Tereza Janosikova of the Czech Republic by seven seconds in an intriguing race, held over 3km.

Janosikova was forced to settle for the silver medal, while Swedish Linnea Golsater won her second bronze of the event.

Following a rest day tomorrow, action resumes on Friday (July 14) with the long distance races.

Team relay events will then bring the competition to a close on Saturday (July 15).

The junior event comes just days after the conclusion of the Senior World Championships in Estonian city Tartu, where Sweden won four out of a possible nine gold medals.
