Italy’s Marcello Bombardi triumphed in the men’s lead competition at the International Federation of Sport Climbing World Cup in Chamonix.

Bombardi was the second highest placed climber in qualifying yesterday, behind his team-mate Stefano Ghisolfi.

He would go on step further today, reaching the top of the wall in the final to put himself in pole position for victory.

The Italian was one of four men to achieve the feat, but with Ghisolfi having fallen early in his run, Bombardi was assured of victory on countback.

Japan’s Keiichiro Korenaga finished as the runner-up, with his compatriot Yuki Hada rounding off the podium.

Local favourite Romain Desgranges was left ruing an earlier mishap, as despite reaching the top of the wall in the final, he was left to settle for fourth place.

It came just days after he emerged as the winner of the lead World Cup in Villars.

Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret was able to make it back-to-back victories in the women’s competition, as she reached the top of the wall in the final.

She would also win via countback, having also having achieved the feat in the morning’s semi-finals.

South Korea’s Jain Kim and Belgium’s Anak Verhoeven rounded off the podium, having also reached the top of the climb.
