The pairing headed into the medal race assured of at least a silver medal, but were tasked with holding off the challenge of Britain’s Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre.

A seventh place finish in the race would prove enough for Skrzypulec and Gliszczynska to seal the overall victory.

They finished the Championships with a tally of 42 points, with Mills and McIntyre settling for the silver on 48.

The podium was completed by Tina Mrak and Veronika Macarol of Slovenia, who finished with 66 points.

"For me it is unbelievable," said Gliszczynska.

"I had said to myself I would not waste time and would come back stronger, but I didn’t know we would come back this strong."
