Russia's Rio 2016 Olympic champion Inna Deriglazova has won the women's foil title at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) World Championships in Leipzig.

The 27-year-old, who also won gold at 2015 World Championships in Moscow, defeated Italian Alice Volpi in the final at the Arena Leipzig in the German city.

Deriglazova claimed a narrow 14-13 victory to seal gold on the opening day of finals.

Bronze medals were awarded to London 2012 silver medallist Arianna Errigo of Italy and France's Ysaora Thibus.

Deriglazova thrashed Errigo 15-6 in the last four while Volpi overcame Thibus 15-12.

The men's sabre competition was won by Hungary's András Szatmári after he defeated Gu Bon-gil of South Korea 15-11 in the gold medal match.

Kamil Ibragimov was forced to settle for one of the bronze medals after losing to Gu 15-10 in the semi-finals.

Earlier in the day, the Russian shocked Rio 2016 and London 2012 gold medallist Áron Szilágyi of Hungary 15-12 in the round of 16.

France's Vincent Anstett collected the other bronze after losing to Szatmári 15-11.

Action is due to continue tomorrow with gold medals to be awarded in the men's épée and women's sabre.
