Home favourite Vladimir Malkov beat India’s Rahul Yadav Chittaboina today to book his place in the men's singles final at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Russian Open Grand Prix in Vladivostok.

Malkov, the favourite for glory following the withdrawal of top seeded-Indian Sourabh Verma, came through a five-game epic to triumph 5-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8 at the Sport Hall Olympic.

Standing between him and the title is fellow Russian Sergey Sirant, who defeated Japan’s Ryotaro Maruo 11-7, 11-9, 12-10.

The final is scheduled to take place tomorrow.

In the women’s singles event, top seed Soniia Cheah of Malaysia and second seed Evgeniya Kosetskaya of Russia are both through to the final.

Cheah overcame third-seeded Russian Natalia Perminova 12-10, 12-14, 11-2, 11-3, while Kosetskaya beat fourth-seeded Japanese Natsuki Nidaira 5-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-6.

The women’s final is also due to be held tomorrow.

US Open action continued today at the Anaheim Convention Center, where second seed Prannoy Kumar of India secured his place in the men's singles final with a 21-14, 21-19 victory over Vietnam's Tien Minh Nguyen.

Awaiting him in the final is compatriot Kashyap Parupalli, who beat South Korea's Kwang Hee Heo 15-21, 21-15, 21-16. 

In the women's singles event, third seed Aya Ohori of Japan and sixth seed Michelle Li of Canada are both through to the final.

Ohori defeated South Korea's Jang Mi Lee 14-21, 28-26, 21-19, while Li overcame Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour 16-21, 21-16, 21-15.
