Defending champions Japan opened their campaign at the 2017 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women’s Asia Cup by thrashing Division A newcomers the Philippines in Bangalore.

Evelyn Mawuli and Miyuki Kawamura led the scoring with 21 and 14 points respectively as the Japanese claimed a 106-55 victory at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in the Indian city. 

Joining Japan at the top of Group B are Australia, who overcame South Korea 78-54.

Kelsey Griffin top scored for Australians with 15 points, followed by Alanna Smith with 13.

Chinese Taipei edged North Korea 77-76 to make a winning start to Group A.

Ro Suk Yong’s two-point lay-up brought North Korea level at 76-76 with just 49 seconds remaining but Huang Ping-Jen converted one of two free throws after being fouled to seal Chinese Taipei’s win.

Bao Hsi-Le was Chinese Taipei’s strongest performer with 14 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and one block.

The other game in Group A saw China defeat New Zealand 77-48.

Three Chinese players registered double figures with Shen Yi and Zhao Shuang each scoring 14 points and Li Meng leading the way with 15.

Action in Bangalore is due to continue tomorrow.

Group A competition sees North Korea face New Zealand and China meet Chinese Taipei.

In Group B, Australia go up against the Philippines and Japan do battle with South Korea.
