This year's Taekwondo World Peace Festival will be a "significant upgrade" on previous editions and take place across three days, it has been announced.

The event in Seoul and Muju in South Korea will be an extension of celebrations which have been held on September 4 since 2006 to mark Taekwondo Day.

The date is significant as it was September 4, 1994 when taekwondo became an Olympic sport at the International Olympic Committee Session in Paris.

Last year, the Festival was held in Seoul's City Hall Plaza and was co-organised by World Taekwondo and the Global Taekwondo Support Foundation for Peace and Unification.

The 2017 edition will begin with a peace concert in Seoul on September 2.

The following day will feature a peace parade through the capital city, as well as a taekwondo demonstration contest, a dynamic kicking competition and a team event.

On September 4, festivities will move to Muju which hosted this year's World Championships last month.

A "Taekwondo Day celebration ceremony" will be staged at the Taekwondowon, the venue for the flagship event.

"Last year's festival was a wonderful event and City Hall Plaza was packed," said World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue.

"The upcoming festival provides us with another chance to spread the good word about taekwondo around Korea and around the world."

Organising Committee chairman Yang Woo Park promised a successful festival.

"We will make the best Taekwondo World Peace Festival for the taekwondo family in the world," he said.
