Double Paralympic bronze medallist Lucy Shuker had to hold off a valiant fightback today to progress in the British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships.

The 37-year-old Briton, who came third in the women’s doubles at London 2012 and Rio 2016 alongside Jordanne Whiley, was up a set and 5-0 against Brazil’s Natalia Mayara at the Nottingham Tennis Centre.

However, Mayara came firing back in the women’s singles match, winning seven games in a row to set up a deciding set.

Following a break for rain at 2-2 in the third, Shuker came back out and got the crucial break to end up with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 victory and will meet Germany’s Sabine Ellerbrock in the quarter-finals.

There were also wins for fourth seed Marjolein Buis of The Netherlands, who saw off South African Kgothatso Montjane 1-6, 7-6, 6-3, and the United States’ Dana Mathewson, who defeated Japan’s Manami Tanaka 6-3, 6-1.

Tanaka’s team-mate Saki Takamuro had a better day as she beat Britain’s Lauren Jones 6-4, 6-1 while Colombia’s Angelica Bernal won 6-1, 7-6 against Macarena Cabrillana of Chile.

In the men’s singles, Ruairi Logan set up an all-British second round tie against this year’s French Open champion and Rio 2016 silver medallist Alfie Hewett thanks to his 6-3, 6-3 victory over Pakistan’s Asif Abbasi.

Logan was the sole victor from the host nation as both Keith Thom and Nicholas Smelt were knocked out.

Thom fell to Brazil’s Daniel Rodrigues 6-0, 6-0 and Smelt was beaten by the same score against Japanese player Takashi Sanada.

Competition in Nottingham is due to continue until Sunday (August 6).
