The World Curling Federation (WCF) confirmed that the Scot had passed away yesterday.

Hay was part of Scotland’s first World Curling Championship winning team in 1967 when the competition was known as the Scotch Cup.

They defeated Sweden 8-5 in the final with the victory coming on home ice in Perth.

Along with this, he also won silver medals at the World Championships in 1963, 1966 and 1968.

In 1979, Hay was awarded the Elmer Freytag Award which led to his induction into the Hall of Fame.

WCF President Kate Caithness said Hay will be "sorely missed" within the sport.

"On behalf of the WCF and the curling community in Scotland and the world at large, it is with deep sadness, that I express our sincerest condolences to the family of Chuck," she said.

"Chuck was instrumental in the early days of the Scotch Cup and establishing the roots of the international competition our sport enjoys so widely today."

As well as being a play, Hay also acted as a coach, journalist and administrator within the sport.

Other tributes for Hay have come from several stars of the sport, including David Murdoch, a silver medallist from Sochi 2014 for Great Britain and double world champion with Scotland.

"A truly sad day for curling," Murdoch tweeted.

"An inspirational gentleman who had time for all.

"My condolences to the Hay family.

"Will miss you immensely, Chuck."
