Paola Egonu produced an inspired performance for Italy once again as they stunned Olympic gold medallists China to reach the final of the International Volleyball Federation World Grand Prix Group One Finals.

Egonu also played a vital role in Italy's victory against the United States on Thursday (August 3) and scored another 26 points as Italy beat China 18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 27-25 at the Nanjing Olympics Sport Centre.

Zhu Ting top scored for the expectant host nation with 21 points, but her efforts proved to be in vain as her nation fell to a surprise defeat.

Italy's opponents in tomorrow's final are due to be defending champions Brazil, who overcame Serbia in the other semi-final today.

The Brazilian team also had to fight back from a set down as they recovered from dropping the opener to prevail 20-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-23.

Tandara Caixeta spearheaded the German charge with an individual haul of 24 points, with Serbian player Tijana Boskovic the top scorer in the match with 32.

Boskovic was unable to save her side from an agonising loss though and they will now take on China in the third-place play-off.

Brazil will have the opportunity to claim their 12th FIVB World Grand Prix title as they have previously topped the podium at the event on 11 occasions.

They have also finished as runners-up five times.

Italy will be looking to clinch the World Grand Prix crown for the first time after they were second in 2004 and 2005, losing on both occasions to Brazil.
