Russia won the first-ever mixed team world title on the final day of the International Judo Federation Cadet World Championships in Santiago.

The Russians defeated Brazil 5-3 in the final of the event at the National Stadium in Chile's capital.

Mixed team judo is set to make its Olympic debut in three years time, with this the first World Championship competition at any level.

Confirmation of the decision to add the event to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic programme came from the International Olympic Committee in June.

Russia would ultimately prevail but they got off to a slow start in the gold medal contest with Brazil’s Laura Ferreira winning the women's under-44 kilograms clash against Liliia Nugaeva.

The contest was level after normal time but only 18 seconds of golden score was required as Nugaeva was penalised with a shido for a false attack.

Arman Gambarian soon levelled for Russia as he threw Aristides Junior for ippon in their under-55kg clash.

Russia then took control of the final when Natalia Elkina forced Nicole Franzoi to submit in the final few seconds of the under-52kg bout.

Karen Galstian extended Russia's lead to 3-1 after he saw off Pedro Medeiros by throwing him for ippon in the under-66kg contest.

Brazil's Gabriella Moraes cut the deficit to 3-2 as he pinned Dari Vasileva to win their under-63kg clash.

The under-81kg bout saw Brazil draw level after Marcelo Gomes claimed a hard-fought victory over Mansur Lorsanov with a waza-ari with 40 seconds remaining.

The South Americans were not on level terms for long though and soon found themselves behind once again when Daria Vladimirova put Russia on the brink of victory by defeating Luiza Cruiz in their over-63kg match.

Russia’s David Babayan, who won individual silver earlier this week, then sealed the title for his country as he defeated Leonardo Sant’Ana of Brazil with an uchi-mata for a waza-ari at over-81kg.

Japan and Georgia shared the mixed team bronze medals.

The Japanese team finished top of the individual medal table with three gold, two silver and seven bronzes.
