Colombian javelin thrower Mauricio Valencia has been chosen by the public as the Allianz Para-Athlete of the Month for the Americas for July.

It comes after he won his country's only gold at the World Para Athletics Championships in London.

The 29-year-old finished first in the men's javelin F34 thanks to a best throw of 35.21 metres.

Valencia followed that up by taking bronze in the F34 shot put.

In the public polls, he received an overwhelming 90 per cent of the votes.

The nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees from the continent.
