The South American nation, which used to be a constituent country of The Netherlands, has recently seen its korfball federation, known as the Surinaamse Korfbal Federatie (SKF), get revived.

This happened after an initiative set up former Dutch international player Gerald van Dijk.

He helped pull together a group of players with roots in Suriname to establish the SKF.

Korfball has been played in the country for years, but since gaining independence from The Netherlands in 1975, structured leagues have gradually disappeared.

This led to Suriname being expelled from the IKF.

However, bosses at the sport’s global governing body have accepted the SKF back as members.

“A few final administrative matters still need to be resolved, but the SKF meets the criteria for admission based on the files submitted,” a statement from the IKF said.

The SKF have expressed plans to send a team to next year’s Pan-American Korfball Championship in Cali, Colombia.

This competition acts as a qualifier for the 2019 IKF World Championships, due to take place in South Africa.
