Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst began the defence of their International Volleyball Federation Beach World Tour Finals title with victory on home sand in Hamburg.

The Germans, also the reigning Olympic and world champions, proved too strong for Brazil's Talita Antunes and Larissa França at the Rothenbaum Stadium.

They recorded a 21-17, 21-19 victory in Pool B with one game played in every three-pairing group today in the women's competition.

In Pool A, Switzerland’s Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré inflicted disappointment on the home crowd by beating Germans Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude 21-15, 21-16.

Pool C saw an all-Canadian clash with Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan triumphing 20-22, 21-12, 15-9 over Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson.

Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk and Eduarda Santos Lisboa took command of Pool D with a 21-15, 21-17 win over Switzerland's Tanja Hüberli and Nina Betschart.

Each pairing will complete the group phase by playing two matches tomorrow.

In the men's competition, two matches were played in the four pools.

Top seeds Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena claimed victory for the United States in Pool A, seeing off Spanish duo Adrian Gavira and Pablo Herrera 21-19, 21-13.

The Spaniards then lost for a second time against Clemens Doppler and Alex Horst of Austria, 18-21, 21-17, 15-13.

In Pool B, Americans Theo Brunner and Casey Patterson won one and lost one.

They saw off Brazil’s world champions Evandro Goncalves and Andre Loyola 21-18, 16-21, 15-13 but then lost to Russia’s Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Nikita Liamin, 18-21, 21-17, 15-10.

Pool C saw Brazil's Alvaro Filho and Saymon Barbosa suffer two defeats.

They first lost to Poland’s Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak, 22-20, 21-16, before missing out to Germany's Armin Dollinger and Jonathan Erdmann, 21-15, 19-21, 15-13.

In Pool D Canadians Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk were beaten twice.

Germany’s Markus Böckermann and Lorenz Schümann claimed a home 20-22, 21-13, 15-11 victory, with Italians Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai coming through 21-17, 21-15.

The final men's group games will also be played tomorrow.
