A greater number of sports will take place at the ExCel centre than anywhere else during the Olympic Games.

It is built on the Royal Victoria Dock, which traces its history back to 1855, the first of the royal docks to accomodate large steam ships, and a significant commercial port as capitalism rapidly proliferated the growth of the global economy towards the end of the 19th century, playing its own small part in Britain becoming the world's leading power until the end of the First World War.

The venue took a battering during World War II though from German bombing but saw a resurgence in trade after the war.

With 165 events taking place at the ExCel during the Games, it will be one of the busiest venues during London 2012, and just over 10 million visitors have passed through its doors since it was constructed.

One of the largest exhibition centres in London and the host of the 2009 G20 summit, it has also hosted the British International Motor Show and even the X-Factor.


It also held a fight between Audley Harrison and Martin Rogan in 2008, and in the same year Gairy St. Clair took on Amir Khan in the World Boxing Organization intercontinental lightweight title.

As well as being a venue for wrestling events, in 2009 the ExCel was the host of the London Mazda Triathlon.

The ExCel will not require any construction to prepare it for any of the 11 sports it will host, which will include boxing, taekwondo, table tennis, boccia and sitting volleyball.
