World Taekwondo Europe (WTE) President Sakis Pragalos has claimed the organisation achieved several noteworthy achievements in 2017, and stated the sport will enjoy milestone events in the coming year.

Pragalos was re-elected as President of the continental body last year, which extended his leadership of the organisation having been in place since 1999.

Re-election also ensured the official remains as a World Taekwondo vice-president.

He thanked the WTE membership for their continued support, while he hailed the efforts of World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue in developing the sport.

"First and foremost, I am grateful to World Taekwondo President Dr. Choue, to have received his support in all WTE actions," said Pragalos.

"His contribution and initiatives are a luminary to the sport and society, and the inclusion of Para-taekwondo in the Paralympics, the continuous development of the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation and innovative events as the Beach Championships, strongly display the pinnacle of taekwondo.

"Inspired by his work, I am also thankful for my re-election in the 2017 Continental Union elections, and for entrusting me in keeping the taekwondo vision and spirit alive in Europe."

Pragalos highlighted the second edition of the President's Cup in Athens as one of the stand-out events of 2017, with the competition featuring 2,182 international athletes from 51 countries, including 14 Olympic medalists.

He also hailed the co-organisation of the inaugural World Taekwondo Beach Championships as another accomplishment, noting the Opening Ceremony was shortlisted for initiative of the year at the 2017 Peace and Sports Awards.

The 2018 event will be organised in Rhodes Island, Greece.

Pragalos also expressed his view that the seven WTE Championships proved a success, including the first edition of the Open European Master Championships.

Five coaches seminars were arranged in 2017 to educate and facilitate new coaches in securing licences.

The WTE President said he was looking forward to the European Championships in Russian city Kazan, dubbed the milestone event of the continental body's calendar in 2018.

The introduction of the Taekwondo Multi Championships, featuring all ages and styles of taekwondo, and the growth of the President’s Cup, were also highlighted by Pragalos as key events to look forward to.

"Coming to an end of a very eventful and productive year, 2017 has been highlighted as one more step towards expanding the taekwondo horizons," he said.

"This could not be done without the support of our member national associations, the WTE Executive Board and Council, our partner and gold sponsor DAEDO and of course our precious athletes, coaches and referees.

"Together we will continue to build on the taekwondo we have dreamed of, embracing and passing its value to the next generations."
