South Korea’s Kyo-Don In secured the gold medal in the up-to 80 kilogram category at the World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions Series event in Wuxi following a lengthy battle with cancer.

In, who underwent surgery for a malignant lymphoma in 2014, completed a 2-0 win over Russia’s Roman Kuznetsov in his final at the Chinese venue to confirm his place back among the elite of the sport.

Iranian Sajjad Mardani beat Vedran Golec of Croatia to finish third.

There was more success for South Korea in the women’s -49kg class with So-Hui Kim securing gold thanks to an emphatic 6-0 victory against current World Champion Vanja Stankovic of Serbia.

Kim’s excellent footwork and defensive prowess were the key factors behind her victory.

Home athlete Yuntao Wenren completed the podium line-up thanks to her bronze medal final win over Nahid Kiyanichandeh of Iran.

Taekwondo fans all over the world were given a new experience as they watched the event through newly-introduced high definition 4-D cameras, which delivered a 360-degree view of every hit.

The cameras not only enhanced the viewing experience of fans but also helped referees at the event, who were able to use ultra-accurate video replays to assist them in their decision making.

If deemed a success, the cameras may be used at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

After today’s competition, World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue said: “Fans of taekwondo have once again been treated to some of the most exciting drama our sport has to offer.

“The Grand Slam Series continues to provide world class performances and my sincerest thanks to all players.

“But, for World Taekwondo, I believe we have also seen great success.

“To watch the competition via the live stream is something truly compelling.

“The introduction of 4-D cameras gives spectators something they have never seen before and puts taekwondo at the forefront of technological innovation in sport.”

The next World Taekwondo Grand Slam Series continues in Wuxi next Saturday (January 20).
