Jersey athlete Elliott Dorey has won an appeal to join the Channel Island's team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.

The Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey (CGAJ) had initially named 32 athletes in their team with 1,500 metre runner Dorey excluded from the list.

This was despite the 23-year-old achieving a qualifying time by breaking the Jersey record in a time of 3min 45.44sec.

Dorey subsequently decided to appeal to CGAJ and has now been allowed onto the team, meaning the total number of athletes set to represent Jersey in Australia stands at 33.

In a statement on their website, CGAJ President Paul du Feu said: "Having to contend with a maximum team size imposed by the Games organisers has added complexity to an already challenging selection process given the number of sports we have to cover.

"Every Games is a learning process for us as we strive to improve our processes.

"We respect and accept the decision of the Appeals Panel, Elliott's ability and potential as a young and talented athlete was never the issue and we welcome him in joining the Jersey team in the Gold Coast and wish all 33 athletes a successful Games competing to their full potential."

Dorey, who won the 2012 Jersey Spartans FCI 10 kilometre road race despite taking a wrong turn, joins 400m runner Sam Dawkins as the first Jersey track athletes since 1994.

The Games are scheduled to take place from April 4 to 15.
